Living in Shared Housing at DHC

Each member has a private room in one of our eight shared houses. Rooms are about 2.5m x 3m, unfurnished, with a vanity unit, laminate flooring, and double-glazed windows. Shared spaces include kitchens, bathrooms, and lounges. Kitchens are equipped with cookers, washing machines, sinks, and fridge freezers. Each house also has access to a large communal garden.

House Rules and Expectations

Noise & Respect: Minimise noise, especially at night, and respect your housemates’ space and privacy.

Cleaning & Maintenance: Members must clean up after themselves daily. A cleaner comes weekly for communal areas, but daily upkeep is expected. Rooms can be decorated within limits.

Visitors & Guests: Visitors are welcome but cannot stay overnight without you, and frequent overnight guests are discouraged. The room is for single occupancy; subletting or long-term guests are grounds for eviction. Pets are not allowed.

Resolving Issues with Housemates

Informal Resolution: Try to resolve conflicts directly with the personor committee involved.
Escalation: If unresolved, escalate the issue to the Housing Office, which will review and work towards a resolution.

Who Do I Ask If I Have Questions?

Each of the 8 shared houses has a house rep, a housemate nominated by the house to represent them and assist new members. If you have questions about your house or the Co-op, your house rep is the first point of contact.

How Do I Report a Maintenance Issue?

On the DHC website, (https://deptfordhousing.coop), there is a section at the bottom of the webpage that is called ‘Maintenance Request’. This is where you can log a maintenance issue for your room, your
house or the wider Co-op.

The website also has further resources including DHC Cloud, with access to documents such as meeting minutes, Co-op policies etc. As well as an Event Calendar and an online Rent Payments system.
