How Deptford Housing Co-op Works
The Co-op is governed democratically, with major decisions made at general meetings where all members have voting rights.
The Management Committee (MC), elected annually by members, oversees the strategic direction and decision-making and the day-to-day housing management is handled by the Housing Management Team.
Role of the Management Committee (MC)
The MC delegates tasks to subcommittees focused on areas such as membership and education, maintenance, grounds, IT, sustainability and finance. These subcommittees meet monthly, and all members are encouraged to participate actively and consider joining or running for positions on the MC.
The MC ensures effective governance while upholding the cooperative’s community-oriented principles. Monthly meetings provide a platform for the sharing of updates, discuss strategic issues, and make democratic decisions, with all members having voting rights to act in the best interest of the co-op.
For details on the specific roles of the subcommittees and how to get involved, please refer to the “Your Role & Responsibilities” section.
Housing Management Team
The Housing Management Team comprises three employed officers:
the Housing Manager, the Finance Officer, and the Maintenance Officer.
● The Housing Manager oversees tenancy management, resident relations, and health and safety compliance, reporting directly to the MC Chair to ensure alignment with co-op policies.
● The Finance Officer manages financial operations and is supported by the MC Treasurer, who ensures transparency and legal compliance.
● The Maintenance Officer oversees property maintenance and repairs, collaborating with the MC Maintenance Coordinator for strategic guidance.
Member Engagement and Expectations
All members are expected to actively contribute by attending meetings, participating in subcommittees, and helping with maintenance and events. The Co-op’s affordability depends on members contributing their time and skills to keep the community running smoothly.
